Opposite the Little Sanctuary is the Washington Cathedral, which provides sanctuary at a national level. The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid in 1907, and construction was completed in 1990. Since the first services in 1912, the Cathedral has opened its doors to people of all faiths as they have gathered to worship and pray, to mourn the passing of world leaders, and to confront the pressing moral and social issues of the day.
But not all forms of sanctuary require building materials. Let's not forget the ultimate sanctuary: the warm embrace of your mother's arms. Stacy and Schuyler Krogh shared a quick hug beside the Peace Cross after helping me shoot this panorama. My tripod was still set up so I spun the camera around and caught this tender moment.
