The Sanctuarium from the Dom Aachen [at aprox. 1 Lux]

The Dom Aachen was built around 786-800. My idea was to show the ancient "Sanctuarium" from the Dom before the Chorus-Hall was built in 1355. So we tried to illuminate the scene with just 1 Candela (= 1 candle) to obtain the holy atmosphere of the - in fact very small - room of the Sanctuarium in the middle of the Dom. The Sanctuarium was a sacrificed and mostly closed room of aprox. 4x4m width and was located just outside the "Oktogon" (see image orange). At the inside of this space the sanctuaries and relics were kept (holy Maria-Shrine). The public could not enter (or even look) into it! |
You can see the original ancient chessboardpattern of the floor when you pan down. (I was a little bit short of time, so used a cap-image to hide the tripod - sorry). Another word to the illumination: i had the idea to take this picture with 1 candle to obtain the privaty of this holy space. But it turned out to be just too dark so we added some of the available light (very dimmed). But the main light still comes from the one candle... I wish every viewer a happy year 2005! |
