I was going for the "Wrinkle in Time" and shoot a residential Christmas light installation. It has been raining all day with no window of dry in sight. So I figured I better prepare for an umbrella shooting session. A first. I started an hour early to cruise the neighborhoods to stakeout for inspiring installations. Another risk I took was that the lights might be shut off by 10pm. In case all would fail, I would shoot in the car to make the Wrinkle.

I found this installation out of the ordinary. The surreal clarity with the white light cones and silver and blue ornaments on a white reflecting PVC canvas had appeal to me. So I sat in the car for a while until it was time to shoot.

The shooting was a bit of a juggle with the umbrella in one hand, the remote release in the other, trying to turn and keep the umbrella and its shadow out of the frame and the water off the gear as good as I could....except for the upshot, of course. That is when the lens got a few drops rained on.

While doing that rain dance, I left the aperture dial unlocked and did not notice the aperture down shift I have caused while turning. It has been 2/3 of a stop below my intended setting and I lost a bit foreground sharpness because of it. No turning back the wrinkle in time has past....so here it is. My first (and not last) umbrella panorama.
