A Gateway to Local History

Tucked away in the centre of Great Malvern is one of the town's oldest buildings. Some people may wander up to it and turn around deciding that there's nothing more to see, some may walk through on their way to the Abbey Hotel or as they explore the town, but how many notice the museum signs and enter to find out more about Malvern and the building itself?

The Priory Gatehouse was originally built as the entry point for the Benedictine Priory around 1480. As you can see, the building itself isn't in its original state after being "tweaked" by both the Tudors and the Victorians, adding extensions and replacing mediaeval decoration. Due to its importance, the building is listed as Grade II* which categorizes it as a “structure of particular architectural and / or historic interest deserving of special protection”.

Inside the gatehouse is the Malvern Museum of Local History, a museum run entirely by volunteers. The experience is broken up into distinct rooms that cover the history of Malvern. It starts off in the Malvern Hills room which looks at the area and the development of the Priory Gatehouse before heading through Medieval, Water Cure & Victorian rooms and an Upstairs Gallery. The experience is then brought more up to date with the Twenty Century room, where you can find out about the part Malvern played in the two World Wars and the development and building of the Morgan motor car.

Taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G fisheye lens. Mounted on a Nodal Ninja 5 panorama head and R-D16 rotator atop a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Shots taken at 6 positions 60° apart, tilted 15° down, and another shot taken looking straight up. Raw files then processed in darktable v3.8.1 before being stitched together using PTGui 10.0.19 Pro and converted using Pano2VR 6.1.15 pro.
