Sayles Hall, site of countless classes, concerts, parties, and lectures, is a memorial by a father to a child who died in young adulthood.

William Clark Sayles (class of 1878) died in his sophomore year; two years later, when William’s class gathered at Commencement, his father offered the gift of the hall so that “when his classmates are conferring credit on their Alma Mater his brief life may also not be without a beneficial influence on the institution he loved so well.” Sayles was completed in 1881.
